The same ratio can have many pixel sizes
From 1920 x 1080 to 1280 x 720
A 1920 x 1080 image simplifies to 16:9. If a new 16:9 design is 1280 pixels wide, the matching height is 720 pixels. A 1080 x 1350 social image simplifies to 4:5.
Simplify with the greatest common divisor
Simplified ratio = width and height divided by their greatest common divisor. Missing height = known width x ratio height / ratio width. Missing width uses the inverse calculation.
Check the destination before cropping
- Use the exact pixel dimensions from the original file when finding its ratio.
- Crop can remove content near the edges, while fit can add empty space.
- Platform upload limits can require a particular pixel size in addition to the correct ratio.
