Using this tool

Separate the bill, tax and tip

Enter the bill before tip, add the tax and tip percentages, then choose the group size. SplitMate shows the final bill and the equal amount each person owes.

Reading the output

Agree on what the percentages apply to

Worked example

A three-person restaurant bill

For a $90 bill, 8% tax and 15% tip calculated on the pre-tax bill, the total is $110.70. Three people would pay $36.90 each.

Calculation

How each share is calculated

Total = bill + (bill × tax rate) + (bill × tip rate). Per person = total ÷ number of people.

Limitations

Check for service charges

  • Check whether the restaurant already included a service charge.
  • Some places calculate tips after tax; this tool uses the pre-tax bill.
  • Round the final shares so their sum still matches the total.

Before relying on the result

Tip basis and unequal orders

Is the tip calculated before or after tax?

The tip is calculated from the original bill amount, before tax.

What if people ordered different amounts?

Use the equal result as a reference, then adjust shares manually according to each person’s items.
